Insights from our faculty
Brian M. Gant, assistant professor of cybersecurity, shared his thoughts on the bachelor’s in cybersecurity program:
The cybersecurity program at Maryville is housed in the John E. Simon School of Business, which affords students the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and skills in broad business areas. This business acumen allows cybersecurity professionals to understand the impact of security breaches on the organization, as well as the context in which resources to protect the company are sought. Understanding the business beyond the IT network helps cybersecurity professionals make the best possible recommendations for an entire organization as they help to mitigate vulnerabilities.
At Maryville, we are intentional with providing the same experience for both online and on-campus students. No matter our students’ location, they have access to virtual machines, which house many of our practical learning programs.
The Maryville Cybersecurity Center of Excellence allows students to work with external organizations that the Center provides cybersecurity services to. Additionally, the Center is set up to be similar to security operations centers in the industry today.
The challenges for cybersecurity professionals will include increased attacks on legacy systems that are housed in organizations worldwide, as well as the protection of the country’s critical infrastructures.
