What careers can you pursue with your online nursing degree?

Nursing demand is on the rise. As medical progress helps to extend lifespans and the population ages, nurses will be needed in greater numbers. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of U.S. citizens age 65 or older grew from 35 million in 2000 to nearly 50 million in 2016. This means plenty of opportunity for nurses of all types and levels.

In addition, chronic illness is on the rise in the United States. By 2025, it is projected to affect an estimated 164 million Americans — nearly half the population — according to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Nurses are needed more than ever, and there’s no sign of demand slowing down. Luckily, Maryville has you covered. With programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, your online nursing degree at Maryville can help you get where you want to be in your nursing career — from wherever you are.

And on top of that, you can specialize your online nursing degree at Maryville, so you can be extra-prepared for the career or practice you want to pursue.

What salary can I expect as a nurse?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2019 median salary was $73,300 for registered nurses with their BSN, and $115,800 for nurse practitioners. Furthermore, the BLS projects the job outlook for nurse practitioners to grow by 45% from 2019-2029, much faster than the national average.

  • Adult-gerontology and pediatric nurse practitioners are ranked in the “Top 10 Highest-Paying Nursing Specialties” according to Scrubs magazine, with typical salaries of $75,000 and up.
  • The need for family nurse practitioners is expected to increase steadily, considering that by 2025, the nation is facing a predicted shortage of at least 100,000 family medicine doctors.
